Upsets ruled the day on the women’s side on Wednesday at the Madrid Open. World No. 3 Vera Zvonareva lost 6-1, 6-4 to 16th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova. Zvonareva missed out on a chance to move up to No. 2 if she had reached the final.
There is a first time for everything – and Lucie Safarova proved it. The Czech beat Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic for the first time in her career 6-4 4-6 7-5.
Maria Sharapova proved again that clay is not her favorite surface as she was knocked out by WTA â€Hot Shot†Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-4.
