MELBOURNE PARK, Australia – Maria Sharapova, Vera Zonareva and Ana Ivanovic advanced at the Australian Open on Thursday.
Sharapova wiped out American qualifier Jamie Hampton 6-0, 6-1 in Rod Laver Arena
Sharapova notes that despite the score the games were competitive, “Well, in the first five or six games, I think four of those went to deuce. We went back and forth. A few of those games she was up 40‑15 and I came back. Those are tough games because you put yourself in a position where you have to pull through.”
” Yeah, she has a big game. I didn’t know too much about her, but saw a little bit on video. When you haven’t played someone before, it’s more a matter of how you’re playing and how you’re figuring out about her game from the beginning rather than thinking too much of what is she going to do.
Seventh seed Vera Zvonareva stopped Lucie Hradecka 6-1, 7-6(3).
Ana Ivanovic advanced with a win over Michaella Krajicek. In light of the 6-2, 6-3 score, Ivanovic said that the match against wasn’t easy, “No, it definitely got tough in the second set in particular. I think she was serving really well the first serve. It was tough for me to read it at times.
“So I really thought I did well on my serves and stayed calm and hold my serves, which is very important.
But she gave me a tough match. I expected to work hard today.
“Yeah, I enjoy playing here. Last couple matches have been really lots of fun. It’s been good to also apply things I worked on in off‑season.
There are no easy matches. Next round again is going to be tough one. But I feel like I’m getting into tournament. It’s nice to get some wins and be in contention to play against top players.”
Angelique Kerber, the 30th seed moved on with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Stephanie Dubois. A couple of surprises on the women’s side as Etkaterina Makarova upended 25th seed Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 7-5 and 29th seed Nadia Petrova was defeated by Sara Errani 6-2, 6-2.
