For the third year in a row an Italian woman has made the French Open final. Twenty-first seed Sara Errani of Italy upset sixth-seed Sam Stosur of Australia 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 on Thursday in Paris to reach her first major singles final. Italy’s Francesca Schiavone won Roland Garros in 2010 and was a finalist in 2011.
Errani who had already knocked out two former French Open champions along the way in Ana Ivanovic (2008) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (2009), earned only her second win over a top 10 player in defeating Stosur. She defeated No. 10 Angelique Kerber in the quarterfinals. Entering the tournament, the Italian was 0-28 versus top opponents.
“I have no words,†Errani said. “It’s incredible.â€
This also marks the first time that Errani has made past the second round of the French Open. Before this year’s French Open Errani’s best run in a major was this past Australian Open where she reaches the quarterfinals.
In addition to the singles final, Errani is also in the women’s doubles final with Roberta Vinci. Errani is the first woman since Kim Clijsters in 2003 to make both the women’s singles and doubles finals at Roland Garros in the same year. The last woman to win both the singles and doubles in the same year at the French Open was Mary Pierce in 2000 who teamed with Martina Hingis for the doubles crown.
Errani will play Maria Sharapova for the title on Saturday.
Errani spoke about the possibility of winning the French Open: “I’m just thinking about playing. Most important thing is just play my game, try to stay in the court better as I can without thinking what I’m doing, because it doesn’t help just with the big motivation and just try to play my game.”
“It’s incredible for me. I didn’t expect it, and I’m here. So I don’t know what to say. For the match I think all was very difficult. Also the first round maybe was the most difficult. So all the matches I played, I’m very happy for how I played because I think I made good games.
“Is not finish, so I have one match more. I have to think about that. That’s it.”
Errani is expected to move into the WTA top ten when the new rankings come out on Monday.
“I didn’t expect, ” said Errani. “I don’t feel like top 10 but now I will be, so it’s a strange sensation, because I have to just ‑‑ after this tournament just relax and think. Maybe my problem always was that I couldn’t believe too much to win with the strong players.
“But now I beat three in a row. I’m in the final in a Grand Slam. So I have to maybe try to think a bit different. I don’t know to explain.”
