(June 25, 2013) No. 1 Novak Djokovic moved into the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win over Florian Mayer of Germany.
“For the opening match of the grass court season, it was a very satisfying performance,” said the Serb. “Even though I think that I can play better, but, you know, as I said for the first match it’s normal to expect that you’re still kind of finding your rhythm and adjusting to a new surface and new movement.
“Hopefully I can elevate my game as the tournament goes on.”
The Serbian commented on the upset of Rafael Nadal on Monday.
“Darcis came up with some incredible shots, incredible points in important moments and he deserved to win.
“To be honest, I was expecting him to be a bit rusty on the court. Rafa with the movement and his game, it’s normal because he has played so many matches this year since he came back. Majority of those matches were on clay. So he didn’t have any matches on grass. It’s totally different surface, totally different game.”
Djokovic is looking for his second title at the All England Club, he won it in 2011.
Fourth seed David Ferrer survived two falls on the court to advance to the second round with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Martin Alund of Argentina.
“Is difficult to play in grass court for my game,” the Spaniard said. “Is very difficult to defense. Today the key was the third set. In important moment he play a little bit nervous. I had more experience than him, and it’s okay.”
Juan Martin Del Potro opened his Wimbledon with a victory over Albert Ramos of Spain 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. Del Potro missed the French Open due to a respiratory illness.
The eighth seed hit 34 winners including 10 aces in the match.
