(February 23, 2014) Japan’s Kurumi Nara won her first WTA tour title beating top seed Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 for the Rio Open crown.
At NO. 62 in the world, the 22-year-old is the top Japanese player. She is the fifth Japanese player to win a WTA tour event.
“She played very well and it was a very tough match for me,” said Nara. “In the second set I was probably thinking too much about winning the title, so after I lost the set I had a good break and tried to come back and play well again in the third set. I’m just so happy I could win in the end today.”
