(May 28, 2014) On a day when American veterans Serena and Venus Williams fell victim to upsets at the French Open on Wednesday, a young American teen, Taylor Townsend stunned the No. 1 French player, 20th seed Alize Cornet on the second show court 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The 18-year-old Townsend who is 205th in the world, earned a wild card spot into Roland Garros from the U.S. Tennis Association based on her performances in lower tier events.
With the victory she’s the youngest U.S. woman in the third round at Roland Garros since 2003, the youngest overall since 2009. Next she’ll face No. 14 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain for a place in the fourth round.
Former world No. 1 ranked junior, Townsend captured the girls singles and doubles titles at the 2012 Australian Open.
