New York, NY – Venus Williams kept the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jen King Cup in the Williams family Monday night with a thrilling three-set win over Kim Clijsters 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in Madison Square Garden in front of 11,702 fans. The Showdown was part of Tennis Night in America, which also included over
700 Youth Registration events the USTA and local facilities hosted
across the country from February 26-March 1 to sign up kids forÂ tennis programs and get them more involved with the tennis.
Williams lost in the finals last year to her sister Serena who could not participate this year due to a leg injury. â€œThis is the crowning of it all, ” said Williams after her win. “This year I was able to take it a step farther against such a great opponent. Kim really played well.”
Venus Williams takes home a check for 400, 000 dollars for her efforts.
The format of the event featured two one-set, no-ad scoring semifinals. The first semifinal saw Kim Clijsters save a match point to topple Ana Ivanovic 7-6.
The second semifinalÂ saw Williams come back from an opening game service break to oust Svetlana KuznetsovaÂ 6-4.
