(January 9, 2016) Sloane Stephens had to complete two wins on Saturday to claim the ASB Classic title in Auckland. The American had to complete her rain delayed semifinal earlier in the day. Stephens was leading former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 5-2 on Friday when the rains came. Saturday morning saw the Dane mount a comeback against the American, but Stephens held her off to win 6-2, 7-6(3) to advance to the final.
Two hours later, Stephens had to take on Germany’s Julia Goerges for the title. The fifth seed went on to win 7-5, 6-2 to claim her second WTA title.
“To win a tournament is amazing and I’m just really happy,” the 22-year-old Stephens said after the match. “It’s definitely been a tough week, I’ve played some really tough players and to play this morning and come back and play the final. It’s the first time I’ve done that so I was really pleased with the way I was able to hold myself together and win this afternoon.”
