(Written prior to the Djokovic v Nishikori quarterfinal)
- 4-time Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray will be hoping to continue a fine performance from the top British singles players at this year’s event when he takes on David Ferrer. Murray, along with Johanna Konta in the women’s draw, is one of 2 British singles players to reach the quarterfinals at the same Grand Slam event for the first time since 1997 Wimbledon when Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski reached the last 8. Not since the December edition of the 1977 Australian Open have 2 British singles players reached the semifinals at the same Grand Slam event.
- Ferrer, the only one of the 8 quarterfinalists to reach the last 8 without dropping a set, is looking to end a 5-match losing streak against Murray today. The likelihood of the Spaniard progressing to the semifinals without dropping a set – for only the 2nd time at a major – is slim, given that all 4 of their previous Grand Slam meetings have gone to 4 sets. That, added to the fact that Murray has won 3 of those meetings, makes this a tough test for Ferrer.
- The prize on offer to the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic is a maiden Australian Open semifinal – and the chance to equal their best Grand Slam performance. It’s been nearly 8 years since Monfils last reached the semifinals at a major, while Raonic has more recent experience of a Grand Slam semifinal – at 2014 Wimbledon.
