(March 7, 2017) From the BNP Paribas Open: World No. 1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from the 2017 BNP Paribas Open due to a left knee injury.
A quote from Serena Williams:
“Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can.”
Williams lost in last year’s Indian Wells final to Victoria Azarenka. The 35-year-old won the Australian Open in January for her 23rd major title.
With the withdrawal, Angelique Kerber will move back up to No. 1 in the world after the Indian Wells event.
