Alexander Zverev Claims First Title in Home Country
(May 7, 2017) Alexander Zverev won his first title on home soil on Sunday beating qualifier Guido Pella 6-4, 6-3 for the BMW title in Munich Germany.
For the third seed Zverev, it’s his second tournament victory of the year and third career title win.
The 20-year-old from Hamburg joined six other players on the ATP World Tour in winning at least two titles this year – Roger Federer (3), Grigor Dimitrov (2), Rafael Nadal (2), Jack Sock (2) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2).
“I lost the final in Halle last year (to Florian Mayer), which was very painful,” said the winner. “I really wanted to win a tournament in Germany, which I’ve done now and I’m very happy about it. Obviously my first title on clay as well. It’s a great feeling right now.”
“I’m confident. I’m playing well so hopefully I can keep going and play some great tennis in the upcoming weeks.”
Argentine qualifier Pella was playing in just his second ATP World Tour final and was going for his first ATP World Tour title.
“It was an amazing week for me. [I’m] sad that I didn’t win today but I played against a great player, a great champion.”
