A look at the quarterfinalists…

On court today…

  • In the 2 quarterfinal matches originally scheduled for Tuesday, Rafael Nadal takes on Pablo Carreno Busta and Novak Djokovic faces Dominic Thiem. Nadal is looking to reach his 10th Roland Garros semifinal and extend the record he set in 2014 for most Roland Garros semifinal appearances in the Open Era. Djokovic, who is aiming to reach his 9th semifinal here, could equal Nadal’s record should he win and Nadal lose today.

  • World No. 1 Andy Murray will attempt to reach his 5th Roland Garros semifinal when he takes on Kei Nishikori on Court Philippe Chatrier today. Despite leading their head-to-head 8-2, he will be wary of the threat posed by Nishikori, who defeated him at this stage at the US Open last year. Should he defeat the Japanese No. 1, he will join Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl in 6th place on the list for most Roland Garros semifinal appearances in the Open Era.

  • Marin Cilic is bidding to end a 7-match losing streak against world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in their last 8 clash and reach his first Roland Garros semifinal. As well as becoming the first Croatian man to reach the last 4 here since 2006, victory today would see him join Wawrinka and Andres Gomez at the top of the list for most attempts before reaching the last 4 here – both of whom, like Cilic if he wins today, reached the semifinals on their 11th Roland Garros appearances.

  • Murray is bidding to reach his 21st Grand Slam semifinal and close the gap on Pete Sampras (23 quarterfinals) in 7th place on the Open Era list for most Grand Slam semifinals reached. Roger Federer (41 semifinals), Djokovic (31*) and Rafael Nadal (24*) are the only active players to reach the last 4 at a Grand Slam on more occasions than Murray. [NB *Written prior to Djokovic and Nadal’s quarterfinal matches here]

  • Murray is bidding to reach his 21st Grand Slam semifinal and extend his record for the most Grand Slam semifinal appearances by a British man ahead of Fred Perry (13 semifinals). Murray has reached the semifinals at the Australian Open 6 times, Roland Garros 4 times, Wimbledon 7 times and the US Open 3 times.

  • Murray is bidding to avoid becoming the first top seed to lose before the semifinals at Roland Garros since Federer lost to Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals in 2010.

  • Murray is bidding to reach his 5th Roland Garros semifinal He is one of just 4 British players along with Perry (1935-36), Bunny Austin (1935, 1937) and Ann Jones (1968-69) to have reached multiple semifinals here.

  • Murray is bidding to extend his record for the most Roland Garros match-wins by a British man. He has a 38-9 win-loss record here, ahead of Perry (28-5), Austin (23-6), Patrick Hughes (21-6), Billy Knight (19-10) and Bobby Wilson (19-9).

  • By reaching his 7th quarterfinal here, Murray has extended his lead for the most Roland Garros quarterfinals reached by a British man in history ahead of Perry (5 Roland Garros quarterfinals) and Austin (4).

  • Murray has lost in the quarterfinals here twice before, falling to Fernando Gonzalez in 2009 and to David Ferrer in 2012. This is his 10th Roland Garros appearance and his 45th Grand Slam overall.

  • Murray is one of the 4 men aged 30 or over to reach the quarterfinals here from the 49 who started in the main draw – the joint-highest number of 30-somethings to reach the last 8 at a Grand Slam in the Open Era. It is the 11th time 4 players aged 30 or over have reached the last 8 at a major in the Open Era. The record for the most 30-somethings through to the semifinals at a major is 3 – at 1968 Roland Garros and at the 2017 Australian Open.

  • By defeating Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 here, Murray recorded his 650th Tour-level match-win. He was the 15th man to reach the 650 match-wins milestone.

  • Last year here Murray recorded his best Roland Garros performance by reaching the final, where he lost to Djokovic 36 61 62 64. He was the 3rd British man in history – and the first since Austin in 1937 – to reach the Roland Garros final. He also became the 10th man in the Open Era to reach the final at all 4 Grand Slam events.

  • Murray is a 3-time Grand Slam champion. He won the 2012 US Open title (d. Djokovic) and became the first British man to win the Wimbledon singles title in 77 years in 2013 (d. Djokovic) before winning the title again in 2016 (d. Milos Raonic). He was one of 5 Grand Slam champions to reach quarterfinals here from the 6 that started in the men’s main draw.

  • Murray is bidding to become just the 2nd British man to win Roland Garros after Perry, who won the title here in 1935.

  • Murray is bidding to add to his US Open and 2 Wimbledon titles and become the 17th man in the Open Era to win at least 3 of the 4 Grand Slam titles (see Preview page 4).

  • Murray warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the semifinals at Barcelona (l. Dominic Thiem) and the 3rd round at both Monte Carlo-1000 (l. Albert Ramos-Vinolas) and Madrid-1000 (l. Borna Coric). He lost to Fabio Fognini in the 2nd round at Rome-1000 (after receiving a 1st round bye).

  • Also in 2017, Murray won his 45th Tour-level title at Dubai (d. Verdasco). He finished runner-up at Doha
    (l. Djokovic) but fell in the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where world No. 50 Mischa Zverev became the lowest-ranked player to defeat Murray at a major since No. 51 Juan Ignacio Chela at the 2006 Australian Open.

  • Murray is seeded No. 1 at a Grand Slam for the 2nd time, having also been seeded No. 1 at this year’s Australian Open. He is the first British man to be seeded No. 1 at Roland Garros since Austin in 1937.

  • Murray is coached by Ivan Lendl, who won Roland Garros in 1984, 1986 and 1987, and former world No. 121 Jamie Delgado.

  • NISHIKORI is bidding to become the 3rd Japanese player – man or woman – in history to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros. Jiro Satoh (1931, 1933) and Kimiko Date-Krumm (1995) are the only Japanese players to reach the last 4 here.

  • Nishikori is bidding to reach his 3rd Grand Slam semifinal and become the 2nd Japanese man to reach 3 or more semifinals at a major after Jiro Satoh.

Japanese men to reach Grand Slam semifinals (all-time)

Jiro Satoh 5 – 1931, 1933 Roland Garros,
1932-33 Wimbledon,
1932 Australian Championships
Kei Nishikori

Zenzo Shimizu

2 – 2014, 2016 US Open

2 – 1920-21 Wimbledon

Ichiya Kumagai 1 – 1918 US Championships

  • By reaching his 7th Grand Slam quarterfinal, Nishikori has taken sole ownership of the all-time record for most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances by a Japanese man ahead of Satoh (6), Zenzo Shimizu (3), Ichiya Kumagi (1), Shuzo Matsuoka (1) and Ryosuki Nunoi (1).

  • By reaching the quarterfinals here for the 2nd time, Nishikori has become only the 2nd Japanese player – man or woman – to reach the last 8 at Roland Garros on multiple occasions after Satoh. Satoh (1931, 1933) is the only other Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, while Kazuko Sawamatsu (1975) and Date-Krumm (1995) are the only Japanese women to reach the last 8 here.

  • Nishikori is bidding to reach the semifinals here for the first time on his 7th Roland Garros appearance. If he wins today, he will join 11 other men in reaching the last 4 for the first time on their 7th appearance here – Tomas Berdych, Alex Corretja, Phil Dent, Roger Federer, Francois Jauffret, Henri Leconte, Ivan Ljubicic, Fernando Meligeni, Yannick Noah, Marc Rosset and Pete Sampras.

  • By reaching the quarterfinals here, Nishikori has equalled his best Roland Garros performance. He also reached the last 8 here in 2015, becoming the first Japanese man to reach the last 8 at Roland Garros in 82 years, before falling to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 5 sets.

  • Nishikori is bidding to defeat a world No. 1 for the 3rd time in his career. He has a 2-14 win-loss record against players ranked No. 1 at Tour-level, with his only wins coming against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at 2011 Basel and in the semifinals at the 2014 US Open. He has a 1-3 win-loss record against No. 1 opposition at the majors.

  • Nishikori has lost all 4 of his previous matches against players ranked No. 1 on clay. The highest-ranked player he has defeated on clay is No. 2 Roger Federer in the 3rd round at 2013 Madrid-1000 – one of only 2 occasions in which he has defeated a Top 5 player on clay in 10 previous attempts, having also defeated No. 5 David Ferrer in the semifinals at 2014 Madrid-1000.

  • By defeating Hyeon Chung in the 3rd round here, Nishikori claimed sole occupancy of 1st place on the list for most Roland Garros match-wins by a Japanese man. He has a 15-6 win-loss record at Roland Garros, ahead of Jiro Satoh (13-3).

  • Nishikori’s victory against Chung in the 3rd round improved his win-loss record in 5-set matches at Roland Garros to 3-1. He has a 16-6 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

  • Last year here as No. 5 seed Nishikori reached the round of 16 (l. Richard Gasquet). This is his 7th appearance at Roland Garros and his 31st Grand Slam overall.

  • At the 2014 US Open, Nishikori became the first Asian male to contest a Grand Slam final after defeating 3 Top 10 players – Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic – in consecutive matches before falling to Marin Cilic in the title match.

  • Nishikori’s best result on clay in 2017 is finishing runner-up as top seed at Buenos Aires (l. Alexandr Dolgopolov). He also reached the semifinals at Geneva (l. Mischa Zverev), the quarterfinals at Madrid-1000 (where he gave a walkover to Djokovic due to a right wrist injury) and the 3rd round at Rome-1000 (l. Juan Martin del Potro), but fell in the 1st round at Rio de Janeiro (l. Thomaz Bellucci).

  • Also in 2017, Nishikori finished runner-up at Brisbane (l. Grigor Dimitrov). He reached back-to-back quarterfinals at Indian Wells-1000 (l. Jack Sock) and Miami-1000 (l. Fabio Fognini), and the round of 16 at the Australian Open (l. Roger Federer).

  • Nishikori has won 11 career singles titles, 2 of which have come on clay – at Barcelona in 2014 (d. Santiago Giraldo) and 2015 (d. Pablo Andujar).

  • Nishikori is the highest-ranked Japanese man in ATP World Tour Rankings history (since 1973). He had the nickname ‘Project 45’ as a major goal was to get him to No. 45 in the rankings, which would be one spot better than the highest by any Japanese man (Matsuoka). He plays here ranked No. 9, five spots lower than his career-high ranking of No. 4 which he achieved in March 2015 after reaching the final at Acapulco.

  • Nishikori plays here seeded No. 8 – his lowest Grand Slam seeding since he was seeded No. 10 at the 2014 US Open. It is his lowest seeding here since 2014, when he was seeded No. 9.

  • Nishikori was born in Shimane, Japan, but moved to Florida aged 14. He is coached by Dante Bottini and trains at the Bollettieri Academy. Michael Chang, who won Roland Garros in 1989, joined his team in 2014.

By defeating Ramos-Vinolas in the round of 16 here, he took sole ownership of 3rd place on the all-time list for most matches won at Roland Garros ahead of Guillermo Vilas. Only Nadal (76) and Roger Federer (65) have won more matches here.

  • Roland Garros is Djokovic’s 2nd most successful Grand Slam event in terms of matches won and semifinals reached, but the only Grand Slam at which he has failed to win multiple titles:

Australian Open 6 58-7 6
Roland Garros 1 59-11 8
Wimbledon 3 54-9 7
US Open 2 62-10 10

  • By reaching his 11th Roland Garros quarterfinal, Djokovic has equalled Federer’s Open Era record of 11 appearances in the last 8 here along with Nadal, who also reached his 11th Roland Garros quarterfinal this year.

  • By reaching his 8th straight quarterfinal here, Djokovic has taken sole ownership of 2nd place on the list for most consecutive Roland Garros quarterfinal appearances in the Open Era ahead of Connors (7). Federer (2005-13) heads the list with 9 straight appearances in the last 8 here.

  • By reaching his 38th Grand Slam quarterfinal, Djokovic has closed the gap on Connors (41 quarterfinals) in 2nd place on the list for the most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances in the Open Era. Federer heads the list with 49 appearances in the last 8 at a major.

  • Djokovic’s 5-set victory against Schwartzman in the 3rd round here improved his win-loss record in 5-set matches at Roland Garros to 6-2. He has a 29-9 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

  • Djokovic has a 26-8 win-loss record in 5-set matches at the Grand Slams. He is one of only 3 men to have won 26 or more 5-set matches at the majors, behind Pete Sampras (29) and level with Lleyton Hewitt (26).

  • Djokovic is looking to avoid becoming the 12th defending champion to lose in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. 2014 champion Nadal was the last defending champion to lose in the last 8 here in 2015.

  • Djokovic is bidding to become the first man in the Open Era – and only the 3rd man in history – to win each of the 4 Grand Slams twice. Roy Emerson and Rod Laver are the only men to have won each Grand Slam on 2 or more occasions. [NB: While Laver completed the feat in 1969, some of the titles were won before the start of the Open Era]

  • Last year here, Djokovic completed the career Grand Slam by winning his first Roland Garros title, defeating Andy Murray in the final. It was his 12th Grand Slam crown – to add to his triumphs at the Australian Open in 2008 (d. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga), 2011 (d. Murray), 2012 (d. Nadal), 2013 (d. Murray), 2015 (d. Murray) and 2016 (d. Murray), Wimbledon in 2011 (d. Nadal), 2014 (d. Federer) and 2015 (d. Federer) and the US Open in 2011 (d. Nadal) and 2015 (d. Federer).

  • Djokovic is making his 50th consecutive Grand Slam appearance at 2017 Roland Garros, which puts him in equal-7th place with David Ferrer and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on the list for the most consecutive Grand Slams played in history. He has not missed a Grand Slam since his debut at the 2005 Australian Open. This is his 13th appearance at Roland Garros.

  • Djokovic warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the final at Rome-1000 (l. Alexander Zverev), the semifinals at Madrid-1000 (l. Nadal) and the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. David Goffin). It is the first time since 2012 that he has not won at least one clay court tournament ahead of Roland Garros.

  • Earlier in 2017, Djokovic won the title at Doha (d. Murray) and reached the quarterfinals at Acapulco and the round of 16 at Indian Wells-1000, losing to Nick Kyrgios on both occasions. He failed to defend his title at the Australian Open, where he fell to wild card Denis Istomin in the 2nd round. He withdrew from Miami-1000 due to an elbow injury.

  • 13 of Djokovic’s 67 career singles titles have come on clay, compared with 51 on hard court and 3 on grass.

  • Djokovic has made 2 Davis Cup appearances in 2017, winning the 2 singles rubbers he has contested to help Serbia defeat both Russia in the World Group first round in Nis in February and Spain in the quarterfinals in Belgrade in April. Serbia will face France in Lille in the World Group semifinals in September.

  • Djokovic announced 1999 Roland Garros champion Andre Agassi as his coach ahead of the tournament. He parted company with his long-term coach Marian Vajda and physiotherapists Miljan Amanovic and Gebhard Phil-Gritsch earlier in May.

  • THIEM is contesting the 250th Tour-level match of his career today.

  • Thiem is bidding to reach the semifinals here for the 2nd straight year and become the 2nd Austrian man in history to reach multiple Grand Slam semifinals after Thomas Muster.

  • By reaching the quarterfinals here, Thiem has become the 2nd Austrian man in the Open Era to reach multiple Roland Garros quarterfinals. Thomas Muster, who reached the last 8 here in 1990, 1995 and 1998 is the only other Austrian man to achieve the feat.

  • Roland Garros is Thiem’s most successful Grand Slam event in terms of matches won. He has an 11-3 win-loss record here, compared with 8-3 at the US Open, 6-4 at the Australian Open and 2-3 at Wimbledon.

  • Thiem is in 2nd place on the list for the most Tour-level match-wins in 2017, behind Rafael Nadal. (See table overleaf)

  • Thiem warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the finals at Barcelona and Madrid-1000, losing to Nadal on both occasions. He is the only player to have defeated Nadal on clay this season, winning in the quarterfinals at Rome-1000 before falling to today’s opponent in the semifinals.

  • Earlier this year, Thiem won his 8th career title at Rio de Janeiro, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals at Brisbane (l. Grigor Dimitrov), Sydney (l. Dan Evans), Rotterdam (l. Pierre-Hugues Herbert), Acapulco (l. Sam Querrey) and Indian Wells-1000 (l. Stan Wawrinka), and the round of 16 at the Australian Open (l. David Goffin).

  • Clay is Thiem’s best surface, with 80 of his 155 Tour-level victories coming on the surface. By contrast, he has a 66-57 win-loss record on hard courts and a 9-8 win-loss record on grass.

  • Thiem recorded a career-high ranking of No. 7 after reaching the semifinals here last year, becoming the 3rd Austrian man – and first since Jurgen Melzer in 2011 – to reach the Top 10. He plays here at the same ranking.

  • Thiem is seeded No. 6 at this year’s tournament – his highest Grand Slam seeding. He has been seeded at the past 7 Grand Slams, with his previous highest seeding being No. 8 (at 2016 Wimbledon, the 2016 US Open and the 2017 Australian Open).

  • Thiem is a former junior world No. 2. He reached the boys’ singles final at Roland Garros as No. 14 seed in 2011, losing to Bjorn Fratangelo 36 63 86. As well as reaching the junior Roland Garros final, Thiem’s best junior result is winning the 2011 Orange Bowl.

  • Thiem joined the Austrian military as part of the country’s mandatory national service for 6 months from November 2014-April 2015, but continued to play on Tour during that time.

  • Thiem has been coached by Gunter Bresnik in Vienna since 2004. His physio is Alex Stober.

A 14th meeting for the 2 players and their 3rd at a Grand Slam – but their first meeting at a major for over 7 years.

Cilic is bidding to end a 7-match losing streak against Wawrinka – his only victories came over the space of 2 weeks in January 2010, defeating Wawrinka in the final to win the title at Chennai and then triumphing in their most recent Grand Slam meeting at the Australian Open. He has won just 3 sets in their 7 encounters since then.

Wawrinka and Cilic are 2 of the 5 Grand Slam champions to have reached the quarterfinals here from the 6 who started the men’s main draw. Wawrinka is a 3-time major champion, having won the title at the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 Roland Garros and the 2016 US Open, while Cilic’s only Grand Slam triumph to date came at the 2014 US Open.

The pair are also the only former Roland Garros boys’ singles champions to have reached the quarterfinals from the 8 who started in the men’s main draw – Wawrinka won the junior title in 2003, while Cilic won in 2005. In 2015, Wawrinka became the first former junior champion to win the men’s singles title here since Mats Wilander in 1988.

Neither Wawrinka nor Cilic has dropped a set in reaching the last 8 here this year. Of the 8 quarterfinalists, Cilic has spent the least time on court in his opening 4 matches.

Cilic is contesting his first match against a Top 5 player this year.

  • WAWRINKA is bidding to reach 3 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals for the first time in his career. He has recorded back-to-back semifinal appearances at the majors on 3 occasions – at the 2013 US Open-2014 Australian Open, at the 2015 Australian Open-2015 Roland Garros and at the 2016 US Open-2017 Australian Open.

  • Wawrinka is bidding to reach his 3rd straight Roland Garros semifinal. He has never 3 consecutive semifinals at a single Grand Slam event, but reached back-to-back semifinals at the Australian Open in 2014-15, Roland Garros in 2015-16 and the US Open in 2015-16.

  • Wawrinka is bidding to reach his 9th Grand Slam semifinal and become the 20th man in the Open Era to reach the milestone. He is bidding to take sole ownership of 20th place on the list for most Grand Slam semifinals reached in the Open Era – moving ahead of Michael Chang, Vitas Gerulaitis, Lleyton Hewitt and Tony Roche, who all reached 8 Grand Slam semifinals.

  • Just 3 Swiss men have reached a Grand Slam semifinal in history – Federer (41), Wawrinka (8) and Marc Rosset (1).

  • Aged 32 years 75 days, Wawrinka is bidding to become the oldest man to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros since Jimmy Connors reached the last 4 here aged 32 years 280 days in 1985. Wawrinka is the oldest man through to the quarterfinals here this year.

  • Roland Garros is Wawrinka’s joint-2nd most successful Grand Slam event in terms of matches won, but his 3rd most successful in terms of semifinals reached:

Grand Slam Titles won Win-loss record Semifinals reached
Australian Open 1 36-11 3
Roland Garros 1 36-11 2
Wimbledon 0 18-12 0
US Open 1 38-11 3

  • Wawrinka has dropped just 47 games in reaching the quarterfinals here – the fewest games he has dropped in reaching the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam since 2015 Roland Garros. The fewest games he has dropped in reaching the last 8 at a major is 37 – at the 2014 Australian Open. The fewest games he has dropped in reaching the semifinals at a Grand Slam is 54 – at 2015 Roland Garros.

  • Wawrinka is bidding to record his 9th straight win and equal his career-best Tour-level winning streak on clay, having defended his title at Geneva prior to coming here. His career-best Tour-level winning streak on clay is 9 straight wins which he achieved on 3 occasions – in winning the title at 2013 Oeiras through to the final at 2013 Madrid-1000, in winning the title at 2015 Roland Garros through to the quarterfinals at 2016 Monte Carlo-1000, and in winning the title at 2016 Geneva through to the semifinals at 2016 Roland Garros.

  • By reaching his 15th Grand Slam quarterfinal, Wawrinka moved into joint-18th place on the list for the most Grand Slam quarterfinals reached in the Open Era with 6 other men – Arthur Ashe, Tomas Berdych, Jim Courier, Lleyton Hewitt, Ken Rosewall and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

  • Wawrinka has lost in the quarterfinals here on one previous occasion – in 2013 when, as No. 9 seed, he fell to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

  • Wawrinka is one of the 4 men aged 30 or over through to the quarterfinals here from the 49 who started in the men’s main draw – equalling the Open Era record for most 30-somethings to reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam. It is the 11th time that 4 men aged 30 or over have reached the last 8 at a major in the Open Era. The record for most men aged 30 or over through to the semifinals at a Grand Slam is 3 – at 1968 Roland Garros and the 2017 Australian Open.

  • Wawrinka’s best Roland Garros performance is winning the title in 2015, defeating Novak Djokovic 46 64 63 64 in the final. He was the first man to win Roland Garros a year after losing in the 1st round since 2002 champion Albert Costa, who had lost in the 1st round in Paris in 2001. At 30 years 71 days was the oldest male champion since Andres Gomez in 1990.

  • Wawrinka has won 3 Grand Slam titles at 3 different majors. He also won the 2014 Australian Open
    (d. Nadal) and the 2016 US Open (d. Djokovic). At the Australian Open, he was the first player to defeat the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to a Grand Slam title since Sergi Bruguera won 1993 Roland Garros. At the US Open, aged 31 years 167 days, he became the oldest US Open champion since Ken Rosewall in 1970.

  • Wawrinka is looking to become the 3rd man in the Open Era to win 3 or more Grand Slam titles after turning 30. Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall are the only men to have won 3 or more Grand Slam titles after turning 30 [see Preview page 8].

  • On his title defence here last year, Wawrinka lost to Andy Murray in 4 sets in the semifinals.

  • Wawrinka warmed up for Roland Garros by defending his title at Geneva (d. Mischa Zverev) after 3rd round finishes at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. Pablo Cuevas) and Rome-1000 (l. John Isner). He lost his opening match at Madrid-1000 (l. Benoit Paire). 7 of his 16 career titles have come on clay.

  • Also in 2017 Wawrinka reached his 4th Masters-1000 final at Indian Wells, falling to Federer, the semifinals at both the Australian Open (l. Federer) and Brisbane (l. Kei Nishikori), and the round of 16 at Miami-1000 (l. Alexander Zverev).

  • Wawrinka has played in every major since making his Grand Slam debut at 2005 Roland Garros. This is his 13th straight Roland Garros appearance and his 49th consecutive Grand Slam appearance, which puts him in 10th place on the list for the most consecutive appearances at the majors in history.

  • Wawrinka is coached by 2000 Roland Garros finalist Magnus Norman.

  • CILIC is bidding to become the first Croatian man to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros since Ivan Ljubicic reached the last 4 here in 2006.

  • Cilic is bidding to become the 2nd man representing Croatia to reach the semifinals here in the Open Era. Ljubicic is the only other man to have reached the last 4 while representing Croatia. [NB Zeljko Franulovic, who reached the semifinals here in 1970-71, and Niki Pilic, who reached the last 4 here 1973, were both born in Croatia but played under the flag of Yugoslavia.]

  • Cilic is bidding to reach his 4th Grand Slam semifinal. The only Croatian player – man or woman – to reach more Grand Slam semifinals is Goran Ivanisevic, who made 7 appearances in the last 4 at the majors.

  • If Cilic reaches the semifinals here on his 11th Roland Garros appearance he will be joint top of the list for most attempts before reaching the semifinals here. Andres Gomez and today’s opponent also reached the semifinals for the first time on their 11th appearance here.

The highest-ranked players he has defeated on clay are No. 6 David Ferrer in the 2nd round at 2011 Rome-1000 and No. 6 Milos Raonic in the final at Istanbul earlier this year. He has lost both of his previous matches with Top 5 opposition at Roland Garros.

  • Cilic has won 4 of his last 6 meetings with Top 5 opposition. The only players he has lost to in that time were No. 1 Andy Murray and No. 3 today’s opponent at the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals. He has not defeated a Top 5 player at a major since beating No. 3 Roger Federer in the semifinals at the 2014 US Open. He has a 3-12 win-loss record against Top 5 players at the Grand Slams.

  • By reaching the quarterfinals for the first time at his 11th Roland Garros, Cilic has moved into 3rd place on the Open Era list for the most attempts before reaching the quarterfinals here. Only Richard Gasquet (13 appearances) and Tommy Haas (12) reached the quarterfinals for the first time after more appearances here.

  • By reaching the quarterfinals here, Cilic completed a set of Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances – he is just the 2nd Croatian man to achieve the feat in the Open Era after Ivanisevic. This is his 38th Grand Slam overall.
  • By defeating Lopez in the 3rd round here, Cilic recorded his 100th Tour-level match-win on clay and became the 3rd Croatian man to record 100 Tour-level clay court match-wins – after Ivanisevic (119) and Ljubicic (105).

  • By reaching the quarterfinals here for the first time, Cilic has recorded his best Roland Garros result. His previous best performance here was reaching the round of 16 in 2009 (l. Murray), 2010 (l. Robin Soderling) and 2015 (l. Ferrer).

  • Last year here Cilic lost in the 1st round, falling to qualifier Marco Trungelliti in 4 sets.

  • Cilic warmed up for Roland Garros by winning the title at Istanbul, defeating Raonic in the final. The victory maintained his record of winning at least one Tour-level title every year since 2008. He also reached the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. Albert Ramos-Vinolas) and Rome-1000 (l. John Isner), but lost his opening match at Madrid-1000 (l. Alexander Zverev).

  • Cilic’s other highlights in 2017 include reaching the semifinals at Acapulco (l. Rafael Nadal) and the quarterfinals at Rotterdam (l. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga). However, he fell in the 2nd round at the Australian Open
    (l. Dan Evans) and lost his opening matches at both Indian Wells-1000 (l. Taylor Fritz) and Miami-1000 (l. Jeremy Chardy).

  • Cilic won the only 5-set match he has contested at Roland Garros – he defeated Leonardo Mayer in 5 sets in the 3rd round in 2010. He has a 25-12 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

  • Cilic has won 17 career titles including 2 on clay – at 2012 Umag (d. Marcel Granollers) and Istanbul this year.

  • Cilic reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 in November 2016. He plays here at No. 8.

  • Cilic is coached by Jonas Bjorkman, who reached the round of 16 here in 1996 and 2007, and Ivan Cinkus.

  • Nadal is bidding to win his 53rd career clay court title at Roland Garros. By winning his 50th clay court title at Monte Carlo-1000, he set an Open Era record for the most career clay court titles ahead of Vilas (49).

    (l. Dominic Thiem) and at the Australian Open this year (l. Denis Istomin).

  • Carreno Busta earned his career-best win in the round of 16 by defeating No. 6 Milos Raonic. He ended a 16-match losing streak against Top 10 opposition to record his first win over a Top 10 player. It was his first victory against a Top 10 player at a Grand Slam in 6 attempts.

  • Carreno Busta’s 5-set victory against Raonic was his first victory in a 5-set match at Roland Garros. He has a 1-2 win-loss record in 5-set matches here and a 3-6 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

  • If he wins today, Carreno Busta is projected to rise to No. 14 in the world. By reaching the quarterfinals here he will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 17 when the new rankings are released on Monday 12 June. He rose to a previous career-high ranking of No. 18 in May this year after winning the title at Estoril and plays here at No. 21.

  • Carreno Busta has won 3 career singles titles. In addition to winning at Estoril earlier this year, he won 2 titles on hard courts in 2016 – at Winston-Salem (d. Bautista Agut) and Moscow (d. Fabio Fognini). He has also won 3 doubles titles – on clay at 2016 Quito with Guillermo Duran and at 2017 Rio de Janeiro with Cuevas, and on hard courts at 2016 Beijing with today’s opponent.

  • Carreno Busta entered the men’s doubles here with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The pair, who reached the final at the 2016 US Open together, were No. 10 seeds but gave a walkover to Rogerio Dutra Silva/Paolo Lorenzi in the 1st round due to Garcia-Lopez’s left thigh injury.

  • Carreno Busta made his Davis Cup debut in 2016.
