Nadal is looking to reach his 10th Roland Garros semifinal and extend the record he set in 2014 for most Roland Garros semifinal appearances in the Open Era. Djokovic, who is aiming to reach his 9th semifinal here, could equal Nadal’s record should he win and Nadal lose today.

World No. 1 Andy Murray will attempt to reach his 5th Roland Garros semifinal when he takes on Kei Nishikori on Court Philippe Chatrier today. Despite leading their head-to-head 8-2, he will be wary of the threat posed by Nishikori, who defeated him at this stage at the US Open last year. Should he defeat the Japanese No. 1, he will join Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl in 6th place on the list for most Roland Garros semifinal appearances in the Open Era.

Marin Cilic is bidding to end a 7-match losing streak against world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in their last 8 clash and reach his first Roland Garros semifinal. As well as becoming the first Croatian man to reach the last 4 here since 2006, victory today would see him join Wawrinka and Andres Gomez at the top of the list for most attempts before reaching the last 4 here – both of whom, like Cilic if he wins today, reached the semifinals on their 11th Roland Garros appearances.

He was the 3rd British man in history – and the first since Austin in 1937 – to reach the Roland Garros final. Also in 2017, Murray won his 45th Tour-level title at Dubai (d. Verdasco). He finished runner-up at Doha
(l. Djokovic) but fell in the round of 16 at the Australian Open, where world No. 50 Mischa Zverev became the lowest-ranked player to defeat Murray at a major since No. 51 Juan Ignacio Chela at the 2006 Australian Open.

Murray is seeded No. 1 at a Grand Slam for the 2nd time, having also been seeded No. 1 at this year’s Australian Open. He is the first British man to be seeded No. 1 at Roland Garros since Austin in 1937.

By reaching his 7th Grand Slam quarterfinal, Nishikori has taken sole ownership of the all-time record for most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances by a Japanese man ahead of Satoh (6), Zenzo Shimizu (3), Ichiya Kumagi (1), Shuzo Matsuoka (1) and Ryosuki Nunoi (1).

By reaching the quarterfinals here for the 2nd time, Nishikori has become only the 2nd Japanese player – man or woman – to reach the last 8 at Roland Garros on multiple occasions after Satoh. Satoh (1931, 1933) is the only other Japanese man to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, while Kazuko Sawamatsu (1975) and Date-Krumm (1995) are the only Japanese women to reach the last 8 here.

Nishikori is bidding to reach the semifinals here for the first time on his 7th Roland Garros appearance. If he wins today, he will join 11 other men in reaching the last 4 for the first time on their 7th appearance here – Tomas Berdych, Alex Corretja, Phil Dent, Roger Federer, Francois Jauffret, Henri Leconte, Ivan Ljubicic, Fernando Meligeni, Yannick Noah, Marc Rosset and Pete Sampras.

Nishikori’s victory against Chung in the 3rd round improved his win-loss record in 5-set matches at Roland Garros to 3-1. He has a 16-6 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

Last year here as No. 5 seed Nishikori reached the round of 16 (l. Richard Gasquet). This is his 7th appearance at Roland Garros and his 31st Grand Slam overall.

At the 2014 US Open, Nishikori became the first Asian male to contest a Grand Slam final after defeating 3 Top 10 players – Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic – in consecutive matches before falling to Marin Cilic in the title match.

Nishikori’s best result on clay in 2017 is finishing runner-up as top seed at Buenos Aires (l. Alexandr Dolgopolov). He also reached the semifinals at Geneva (l. Mischa Zverev), the quarterfinals at Madrid-1000 (where he gave a walkover to Djokovic due to a right wrist injury) and the 3rd round at Rome-1000 (l. Juan Martin del Potro), but fell in the 1st round at Rio de Janeiro (l. Thomaz Bellucci).

Also in 2017, Nishikori finished runner-up at Brisbane (l. Grigor Dimitrov). He reached back-to-back quarterfinals at Indian Wells-1000 (l. Jack Sock) and Miami-1000 (l. Fabio Fognini), and the round of 16 at the Australian Open (l. Roger Federer).

Nishikori has won 11 career singles titles, 2 of which have come on clay – at Barcelona in 2014 (d. Santiago Giraldo) and 2015 (d. Pablo Andujar).

Nishikori is the highest-ranked Japanese man in ATP World Tour Rankings history (since 1973). He had the nickname ‘Project 45’ as a major goal was to get him to No. 45 in the rankings, which would be one spot better than the highest by any Japanese man (Matsuoka). He plays here ranked No. 9, five spots lower than his career-high ranking of No. 4 which he achieved in March 2015 after reaching the final at Acapulco.

Nishikori plays here seeded No. 8 – his lowest Grand Slam seeding since he was seeded No. 10 at the 2014 US Open. It is his lowest seeding here since 2014, when he was seeded No. 9.

Nishikori was born in Shimane, Japan, but moved to Florida aged 14. He is coached by Dante Bottini and trains at the Bollettieri Academy. Michael Chang, who won Roland Garros in 1989, joined his team in 2014.

Djokovic is making his 50th consecutive Grand Slam appearance at 2017 Roland Garros, which puts him in equal-7th place with David Ferrer and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on the list for the most consecutive Grand Slams played in history. He has not missed a Grand Slam since his debut at the 2005 Australian Open. This is his 13th appearance at Roland Garros.

Djokovic warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the final at Rome-1000 (l. Alexander Zverev), the semifinals at Madrid-1000 (l. Nadal) and the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. David Goffin). It is the first time since 2012 that he has not won at least one clay court tournament ahead of Roland Garros.

Earlier in 2017, Djokovic won the title at Doha (d. Murray) and reached the quarterfinals at Acapulco and the round of 16 at Indian Wells-1000, losing to Nick Kyrgios on both occasions. He failed to defend his title at the Australian Open, where he fell to wild card Denis Istomin in the 2nd round. He withdrew from Miami-1000 due to an elbow injury.

13 of Djokovic’s 67 career singles titles have come on clay, compared with 51 on hard court and 3 on grass.

Djokovic has made 2 Davis Cup appearances in 2017, winning the 2 singles rubbers he has contested to help Serbia defeat both Russia in the World Group first round in Nis in February and Spain in the quarterfinals in Belgrade in April. Serbia will face France in Lille in the World Group semifinals in September.

Djokovic announced 1999 Roland Garros champion Andre Agassi as his coach ahead of the tournament. He parted company with his long-term coach Marian Vajda and physiotherapists Miljan Amanovic and Gebhard Phil-Gritsch earlier in May.

THIEM is contesting the 250th Tour-level match of his career today.

Thiem is bidding to reach the semifinals here for the 2nd straight year and become the 2nd Austrian man in history to reach multiple Grand Slam semifinals after Thomas Muster.

Last year here Thiem recorded his best Grand Slam performance by reaching the semifinals (l. today’s opponent). This is his 4th straight Roland Garros appearance and his 14th Grand Slam overall.

Thiem warmed up for Roland Garros by reaching the finals at Barcelona and Madrid-1000, losing to Nadal on both occasions. He is the only player to have defeated Nadal on clay this season, winning in the quarterfinals at Rome-1000 before falling to today’s opponent in the semifinals.

Earlier this year, Thiem won his 8th career title at Rio de Janeiro, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals at Brisbane (l. Grigor Dimitrov), Sydney (l. Nadal is bidding to become the first player in the Open Era – and only the 2nd player in history – to win 10 titles at any Grand Slam event. Margaret Court is the only player in history to have won 10 or more titles at one Grand Slam event, winning the Australian Open on 11 occasions between 1960 and 1973 [see Preview page 1].

Nadal is bidding to further extend the record he set at 2013 Roland Garros for the most men’s Grand Slam titles at any one event. He won the title here in 2005-08 and 2010-14. He is the only man in history to have won 5 titles in a row at Roland Garros.

Last year here, Nadal gave a walkover ahead of his 3rd round match with Marcel Granollers due to a wrist injury. This is Nadal’s 13th successive Roland Garros and his 48th appearance at a major.
Nadal is one of only 2 players to have won multiple clay court titles this year along with Alexander Zverev. He won his 10th titles at both Monte Carlo-1000 (d. Albert Ramos-Vinolas) and Barcelona (d. Dominic Thiem) – becoming the first man in the Open Era to win a singles tournament on 10 occasions – and his 30th Masters 1000 title at Madrid (d. Thiem).

Nadal is bidding to win his 53rd career clay court title at Roland Garros. By winning his 50th clay court title at Monte Carlo-1000, he set an Open Era record for the most career clay court titles ahead of Vilas (49).

Nadal has been coached by his uncle Toni since the age of 4. He added 1998 Roland Garros champion Carlos Moya to his coaching team ahead of the 2017 season.

Carreno Busta is bidding to become the 13th Spanish man to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros in the Open Era. Only 2 other active Spanish players have made the last 4 here – today’s opponent (9 times) and David Ferrer (twice).

By reaching the quarterfinals here, Carreno Busta has recorded his best Grand Slam result. His previous best result at a major was reaching the 3rd round at the US Open in both 2014 (l. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga) and 2016
(l. Dominic Thiem) and at the Australian Open this year (l. Denis Istomin).

Carreno Busta earned his career-best win in the round of 16 by defeating No. 6 Milos Raonic. He ended a 16-match losing streak against Top 10 opposition to record his first win over a Top 10 player. It was his first victory against a Top 10 player at a Grand Slam in 6 attempts.

Carreno Busta’s 5-set victory against Raonic was his first victory in a 5-set match at Roland Garros. He has a 1-2 win-loss record in 5-set matches here and a 3-6 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

Carreno Busta has won 6 of his last 7 matches against lefthanded players. The only lefthander he has lost to in that time is Federico Delbonis in the 2nd round at Miami-1000 earlier this year. He has a 13-16 win-loss record against lefthanded players overall.

If he wins today, Carreno Busta is projected to rise to No. 14 in the world. By reaching the quarterfinals here he will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 17 when the new rankings are released on Monday 12 June. He rose to a previous career-high ranking of No. 18 in May this year after winning the title at Estoril and plays here at No. 21.

Carreno Busta’s previous best result at Roland Garros was reaching the 2nd round here in 2015 (l. Jack Sock) and 2016, when he fell to Aljaz Bedene in 5-sets. This is his 5th appearance at Roland Garros and 15th Grand Slam overall.

Carreno Busta’s best result in 2017 is winning his first clay court title at Estoril, defeating Gilles Muller in the final. Also on clay in 2017, he reached the final at Rio de Janeiro (l. Thiem), the semifinals at Buenos Aires
(l. Alexandr Dolgopolov) and Sao Paulo (l. Pablo Cuevas) and the 3rd round at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. Novak Djokovic) and Barcelona (l. Yuichi Sugita) (after receiving a 1st round bye). He lost in the 2nd round at Rome-1000 (l. Roberto Bautista Agut) and the 1st round at Madrid-1000 (l. Benoit Paire).

Elsewhere in 2017, Carreno Busta reached the semifinals at Indian Wells-1000 (l. Stan Wawrinka), the quarterfinals at Sydney (l. Andrey Kuznetsov) and the 3rd round at the Australian Open. He lost his opening match at Miami-1000.

Clay is Carreno Busta’s strongest surface. He has a 62-51 win-loss record on clay, compared to 40-41 on hard courts and 0-5 on grass.

Carreno Busta plays here seeded No. 20 – it is the 2nd time he has been seeded at a Grand Slam, after he was seeded No. 30 at the Australian Open this year.

Carreno Busta has won 3 career singles titles. In addition to winning at Estoril earlier this year, he won 2 titles on hard courts in 2016 – at Winston-Salem (d. Bautista Agut) and Moscow (d. Fabio Fognini). He has also won 3 doubles titles – on clay at 2016 Quito with Guillermo Duran and at 2017 Rio de Janeiro with Cuevas, and on hard courts at 2016 Beijing with today’s opponent.

Carreno Busta entered the men’s doubles here with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The pair, who reached the final at the 2016 US Open together, were No. 10 seeds but gave a walkover to Rogerio Dutra Silva/Paolo Lorenzi in the 1st round due to Garcia-Lopez’s left thigh injury.

Carreno Busta made his Davis Cup debut in 2016. He played his first live rubbers in Spain’s 3-2 World Group first round victory over Croatia in Osijek in February, winning the decisive 5th rubber against Nikola Mektic. He fell to Viktor Troicki as Spain lost 4-1 to Serbia in the World Group quarterfinals in Belgrade in April.
