No. 2 Novak Djokovic (SRB) v Ernests Gulbis (LAT)

No. 3 Roger Federer (SUI) v No. 27 Mischa Zverev (GER)

No. 6 Milos Raonic (CAN) v No. 25 Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ESP)

No. 8 Dominic Thiem (AUT) v Jared Donaldson (USA)

No. 10 Alexander Zverev (GER) v (Q) Sebastian Ofner (AUT)

No. 11 Tomas Berdych (CZE) v David Ferrer (ESP)

No. 13 Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) v Dudi Sela (ISR)

No. 15 Gael Monfils (FRA) v Adrian Mannarino (FRA)

On court today…

  • Novak Djokovic continues his campaign for a 3rd Wimbledon title with a tricky test against Ernests Gulbis in the 2nd match on Centre Court. Gulbis, who upset No. 29 seed Juan Martin del Potro in the 2nd round here, is looking to take another scalp and record just his 2nd career victory over a Top 5 player at a major. If he wins and reaches the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time – and the 5th time at a Grand Slam – he will equal Larisa Savchenko’s record for the most Grand Slam round of 16 appearances by a Latvian player.

  • 7-time Wimbledon champion Federer will follow Djokovic when he takes on Mischa Zverev in the 3rd match on Centre Court. Federer has only twice lost before the round of 16 in his last 49 Grand Slam appearances – at 2013 Wimbledon and at the 2015 Australian Open and will hope to avoid another slip up today. He has lost to just one of his 21 previous encounters with German opposition at the Grand Slams.

  • As well as brother Mischa, Alexander Zverev is also in action today against qualifier Sebastian Ofner in the 3rd match on No. 2 Court. The Zverevs are the first pair of brothers to reach the 3rd round at the same Wimbledon since Tim and Tom Gullikson in 1984 – and the 4th to achieve the feat at Wimbledon in the Open Era. Just 2 sets of brothers have reached the round of 16 at the same Grand Slam event in the Open Era – Gene and Sandy Mayer at 1979 Wimbledon, and Emilio and Javier Sanchez at the 1991 US Open.

  • There are 12 men aged 30 or over through to the 3rd round here from the 48 who started in the main draw – the joint-most to reach the 3rd round at Wimbledon in the Open Era. There were also 12 men aged 30 or over in the 3rd round here in 1978. The record for the most men aged 30 or over through to the round of 16 here is 6 – in 1969, 1970 and 1975.

Djokovic has lost to a player ranked outside the Top 100 at Tour-level on just 2 occasions since retiring against No. 319 Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinals at 2010 Belgrade – falling to No. 145 Juan Martin del Potro in the 1st round at the Rio 2016 Olympic Tennis Event and No. 117 Denis Istomin in the 2nd round at the 2017 Australian Open. He has never lost to a player ranked as low as No. 589 Gulbis.

Djokovic’s loss to Istomin at this year’s Australian Open is his only loss to a player ranked outside the Top 100 at a Grand Slam.

  • 3-time Wimbledon champion DJOKOVIC is bidding to reach the round of 16 here for the 10th time.

  • Djokovic advanced to the 3rd round after Martin Klizan retired with a left leg injury with Djokovic leading 63 2-0 in the 1st round on Tuesday, before defeating Adam Pavlasek 62 62 61 in the 2nd round on Thursday.

  • Last year here, as top seed and defending champion, Djokovic fell to Sam Querrey in the 3rd round – his earliest Wimbledon loss since he fell to Marat Safin in the 2nd round in 2008.

  • By defeating Klizan in the 1st round here, Djokovic took sole occupancy of 2nd place on the all-time list for most Grand Slam match-wins ahead of Jimmy Connors (233). Djokovic has a 235-38 win-loss record at the majors – only Roger Federer (316) has recorded more Grand Slam match-wins in history. (See Preview page 11).

  • Djokovic is bidding to win his 4th Wimbledon title and move into joint-6th place on the list for most Wimbledon titles won in history (see Preview page 3). He defeated Rafael Nadal to win his first Wimbledon title in 2011, and won back-to-back titles in 2014-15, defeating Federer in the final on both occasions. He also reached the final here in 2013 (l. Andy Murray).

  • Djokovic is looking to win his 13th Grand Slam title and take sole ownership of 4th place on the all-time list of Grand Slam men’s singles title winners. He is currently tied with Roy Emerson on 12 major titles, behind Federer (18), Nadal (15) and Pete Sampras (14).

  • In Grand Slam play in 2017, Djokovic failed to retain his titles at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros. He reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros (l. Dominic Thiem), but lost to wild card Denis Istomin in the 2nd round at the Australian Open – it was his earliest Grand Slam defeat since falling to Safin here in 2008.

  • Djokovic warmed up for Wimbledon by winning the title at Eastbourne, defeating Gael Monfils in the final. It was the first time he has played a grass court event prior to Wimbledon since 2010 Queen’s, where he fell in the 3rd round. It was his 4th grass court title, to add to his 3 victories here.

  • Elsewhere in 2017, Djokovic won the title at Doha (d. Murray) and reached the final at Rome-1000 (l. Alexander Zverev). He also reached the semifinals at Madrid-1000 (l. Nadal) and the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo-1000 (l. David Goffin).

  • Djokovic slipped to No. 4 in the rankings after failing to retain his title at Roland Garros this year – his lowest ranking since 12 October 2009. He plays here at the same ranking. He is one of 3 players in contention for the post-Wimbledon No. 1 ranking – he will return to No. 1 for the first time since 31 October 2016 if he wins the title here and neither Murray nor Nadal reach the semifinals.

  • Djokovic is making his 13th consecutive appearance at Wimbledon and his 51st straight Grand Slam overall – the 3rd-longest active streak of Grand Slams played and the 7th-longest streak overall.

  • Djokovic is one of the 12 men aged 30 or over through to the 3rd round at Wimbledon this year from the 48 who started in the main draw – the joint-most 30-somethings to reach the 3rd round at Wimbledon in the Open Era. There were also 12 men aged 30 or over in the 3rd round here in 1978. The record for the most men aged 30 or over through to the round of 16 here is 6 – in 1969, 1970 and 1975.

  • Djokovic has played Davis Cup since 2004. He won both of the singles rubbers he has played this year, as Serbia defeated Russia and Spain to reach the World Group semifinals. Serbia will play France in the last 4 in Lille on 15-17 September.

  • Djokovic is coached by 1992 Wimbledon champion Andre Agassi. He is also working with Mario Ancic, who reached the semifinals here in 2004, at Wimbledon this year.

  • GULBIS is bidding to reach the round of 16 here for the first time and record his best Wimbledon result. This is his 10th appearance at Wimbledon and his 38th Grand Slam overall.

  • Gulbis defeated Victor Estrella Burgos 61 61 62 in the 1st round on Tuesday and No. 29 seed Juan Martin del Potro 64 64 76(3) in the 2nd round on Thursday for his first Tour-level match-wins since he reached the round of 16 at 2016 Roland Garros.

  • Gulbis is bidding to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the 5th time and join Larisa Savchenko at the top of the list for most Grand Slam round of 16 appearances by a Latvian player. Gulbis is the only Latvian man to have played at the Grand Slams. [NB Savchenko’s first 3 appearances in the round of 16 at a major came while she was competing under the flag of USSR.]

Player Grand Slam round of 16 appearances
Ernests Gulbis??

2 (’11 Australian Open; ’16 US Open)

  • Gulbis is bidding to join compatriot Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16 here. If he wins today, it will be the first time in history that Latvia has had multiple representation in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam. On Friday, Ostapenko became the first Latvian player to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon since Savchenko reached the quarterfinals here in 1994.

  • By reaching the 3rd round here Gulbis became the 2nd Latvian player – man or woman – to reach the 3rd round at Wimbledon on multiple occasions after Savchenko, who reached the quarterfinals here in 1994 and the 3rd round in 1996 and 1999. [NB Savchenko also reached the 3rd round here on multiple other occasions while competing under the flag of USSR.]

  • By reaching the 3rd round here, Gulbis has equalled his best Wimbledon performance. He also reached the 3rd round here in 2013 (l. Fernando Verdasco). Last year here he lost to Jack Sock in the 1st round.

  • Gulbis’ best Grand Slam performance is reaching the semifinals at 2014 Roland Garros, where he defeated Roger Federer in the round of 16 and Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals before losing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. He reached a career high ranking of No. 10 after reaching the last 4 in Paris.

  • Gulbis has struggled with injuries over the last 2 seasons and dropped to No. 589 in the rankings on Monday – his lowest ranking since October 2005. He struggled with a shoulder injury in 2016 and has had further injury problems this year – withdrawing from Montpellier and Marseille (right wrist), and from Geneva with a left calf injury. He plays here using a protected ranking of No. 99.

  • Gulbis is looking to record his 5th match-win at any level in 2017. As well as his 2 wins here, his only other victories this year came in the qualifying draw at Rotterdam (d. Sergiy Stakhovsky, l. Evgeny Donskoy) and in a 2nd round finish as a wild card at the Prostejov Challenger (CZE), where he defeated Norbert Gombos before giving a walkover to Tommy Robredo. He lost his opening match in the qualifying draws at Indian Wells-1000, Miami-1000, Barcelona and Estoril.

  • Gulbis is aiming to record 3 consecutive match-wins on grass – at any level – for the first time in his career. By reaching the 3rd round here, he has won back-to-back matches on grass for just the 4th time. He previously achieved the feat in reaching the 3rd round at 2008 Queen’s (l. Andy Murray), the 3rd round here in 2013 and in the 2 rounds of qualifying for 2016 Halle, where he went on to lose to Benjamin Becker in the 1st round of the main draw.

  • Gulbis is bidding to record his 2nd victory against a Top 5 player at a major. His only previous victory against a Top 5 player at a Grand Slam came against No. 4 Federer at 2014 Roland Garros. He has a 1-5 win-loss record against Top 5 opposition at the Grand Slams and a 5-26 win-loss record against Top 5 opposition overall.

  • Gulbis is bidding to defeat a seeded player at Wimbledon for the 4th time in his career. By defeating No. 29 seed Del Potro in the 2nd round here, he improved his win-loss record against seeds at Wimbledon to 3-4. He also defeated No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych in the 1st round here in 2012 and No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 2nd round in 2013. He has a 12-15 win-loss record against seeds at the Grand Slams overall.

  • Gulbis has not won a 5-set match since he defeated Federer at 2014 Roland Garros. He lost the only 5-set match he has contested at Wimbledon to Jerzy Janowicz in the 2nd round here in 2012. He has a 4-9 win-loss record in 5-set matches overall.

  • Gulbis has won 6 career singles titles – most recently at 2014 Nice (d. Federico Delbonis). None of his career titles have come on grass. He has a perfect 6-0 record in Tour-level finals.

  • Gulbis’ 22-year-old sister Laura Gulbe has played in Pro Circuit events and has played Fed Cup 3 times for Latvia.

  • Gulbis is coached by Pjotrs Necajevs.

Zverev didn’t register a game in their first grass court meeting at 2013 Halle – one of only 2 Tour-level double bagels Federer has recorded in best-of-3 set matches during his career. The other came against Gaston Gaudio in the semifinals at the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup.

Zverev is looking to become the 2nd German player to defeat Federer at a Grand Slam after Tommy Haas, who defeated Federer in 5 sets at the Australian Open in 2002. Federer has a 20-1 win-loss record against German players at the majors overall.

  • Federer has only twice lost before the round of 16 in his last 49 Grand Slam appearances – at 2013 Wimbledon, when he fell to Stakhovsky in the 2nd round, and at the 2015 Australian Open, when he fell to Andreas Seppi in the 3rd round.

  • Federer recorded his 85th Wimbledon match-win in the 1st round here, taking sole ownership of the record for most match-wins at Wimbledon in the Open Era, ahead of Jimmy Connors (84). He was leading Alexandr Dolgopolov 63 3-0 in the 1st round on Tuesday when Dolgopolov retired with a right ankle injury and defeated Dusan Lajovic 76(0) 63 62 in the 2nd.

  • Federer hit the 10,000th ace of his career during his 1st round match here – becoming just the 3rd man to hit 10,000 aces since the ATP began tracking the statistic in 1991. Federer has now hit a total of 10,013 aces at Tour-level, behind Ivo Karlovic (12,062) and Goran Ivanisevic (10,131).

  • Federer is bidding to become the first man in history to win 8 Wimbledon titles. He would become just the 2nd man in history to win 8 titles at the same Grand Slam event. Rafael Nadal became the first man to achieve the feat by winning the 8th of his 10 Roland Garros titles in 2013. (See Preview page 2)

  • At 35 years 342 days, Federer is looking to become the oldest man in the Open Era to win the Wimbledon title. By winning the Australian Open this year aged 35 years 174 days (d. Nadal), he became the 2nd oldest man to win a Grand Slam title after Ken Rosewall won the 1972 Australian Open aged 37 years 62 days.

  • Last year here Federer reached his 11th Wimbledon semifinal – and his 40th Grand Slam semifinal overall – but fell to Milos Raonic in 5-sets.

  • Federer is contesting his 70th Grand Slam event at 2017 Wimbledon, tying Fabrice Santoro’s record for most Grand Slam appearances. (See Preview page 8)

  • Federer warmed up for Wimbledon by winning his 92nd Tour-level title and his 9th at Halle, defeating Alexander Zverev 61 63 in the final. He became just the 2nd man in the Open Era, after Nadal, to win a tournament on 9 or more occasions.

  • By winning his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year, Federer extended his lead at the top of the all-time Grand Slam titles list in men’s tennis and tied Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in 5th place on the overall list for most Grand Slam singles titles. He is bidding for his 19th major title here in London, which would see him join Helen Wills Moody in 4th place on the list. (See Preview page 2)

  • Also in 2017, Federer won the titles at Indian Wells-1000 (d. Stan Wawrinka) and Miami-1000 (d. Nadal). He lost in the 2nd round at Dubai (l. Evgeny Donskoy) and in his opening match at Stuttgart (l. Tommy Haas). With 4 Tour-level titles in 2017, he is in joint-first place with Nadal on the list for most Tour-level titles won this year. He withdrew from Roland Garros to prepare for the grass court season.

  • In 2012, Federer equalled William Renshaw and Pete Sampras’ record of 7 Wimbledon titles, defeating Andy Murray in the final. He also won the title at Wimbledon in 2003-07 and 2009.

  • This is Federer’s 19th consecutive appearance at Wimbledon, putting him in joint-1st place of the list with Connors for consecutive appearances here. Federer is 2nd to Connors (20) for most total appearances at Wimbledon, with 19.

  • Federer holds the Open Era record for the most career grass court titles with 16 titles on the surface. In addition to 7 titles at Wimbledon, his other 9 titles were won at Halle in 2003-06, 2008, 2013-15 and 2017.

  • Federer is the most successful active player on grass with a 159-24 career win-loss record.

  • Federer is one of the 12 men aged 30 or over through to the 3rd round at Wimbledon this year from the 48 who started in the main draw – the joint-most 30-somethings to reach the 3rd round at Wimbledon in the Open Era. There were also 12 men aged 30 or over in the 3rd round here in 1978. The record for the most men aged 30 or over through to the round of 16 here is 6 – in 1969, 1970 and 1975.

  • Federer is coached by former world No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic, who reached the 3rd round here in 2006-07 and 2011, and Severin Luthi.

  • Lefthander ZVEREV is bidding to record his 100th Tour-level match-win and reach the round of 16 here for the first time.

  • By reaching the 3rd round here, Zverev has equalled his best Wimbledon result. He also reached the 3rd round here in 2008, when he retired with a right hamstring strain while trailing Stan Wawrinka 75 61.

  • Zverev advanced to the 3rd round after defeating Bernard Tomic 64 63 64 and Mikhail Kukushkin 61 62 26 36 64 in the opening 2 rounds here. His 5-set win over Kukushkin improved his win-loss record in 5-set matches to 1-1 at Wimbledon and to 2-3 at Tour-level. [NB He also won a 5-set match in qualifying for Wimbledon in 2007]

  • Zverev’s 1st round win over Tomic was his first match-win at Wimbledon since 2009, when Dmitry Tursunov retired with a foot injury with Zverev leading 64 62 3-0 in the 1st round. He fell to Philipp Petzschner in 5 sets in the 2nd round that year.

  • This is Zverev’s 5th Wimbledon appearance – and his first here since 2011, when he fell to Xavier Malisse in the 1st round. He failed to qualify here in 2012, 2013 and 2016, and didn’t attempt to qualify here in 2014 and 2015. This is only the 6th time he has advanced beyond the 1st round at a Grand Slam in 20 appearances at the majors.

  • Zverev failed to qualify for the Grand Slams on 11 occasions after his main draw appearance at 2012 Roland Garros before finally qualifying successfully at the 2016 US Open. He has successfully qualified for the majors on just 4 occasions in 21 attempts – including on his debut here in 2007. He failed in his only other attempt to qualify for Wimbledon in 2010.

  • Zverev warmed up for Wimbledon by reaching his first Tour-level grass court semifinal at Stuttgart (l. Feliciano Lopez) – the only time he has recorded 3 straight match-wins on grass at Tour-level. He also reached the 2nd round at both Halle (d. Lukas Lacko, l. today’s opponent) and Eastbourne (d. Ryan Harrison, l. Tomic).

  • Zverev’s brother, Alexander, is also bidding to reach the round of 16 here. Should they both win their 3rd round matches, the Zverevs will become just the 3rd pair of brothers to reach the round of 16 at the same Grand Slam event in the Open Era – after Gene and Sandy Mayer at 1979 Wimbledon, and Emilio and Javier Sanchez at the 1991 US Open.

  • By reaching the 3rd round here, the Zverevs became the first pair of brothers to reach the 3rd round at the same Wimbledon since Tim and Tom Gullikson in 1984. Just 3 other pairs of brothers have reached the 3rd round at the same Wimbledon in the Open Era – Jeff and Russell Simpson (1973), the Gulliksons (1978-79, 1984) and the Mayers (1979, 1982).

  • Along with brother Alexander, Zverev is looking to become the first German to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon since 2013, when Tommy Haas fell at that stage. The last time multiple German men reached the round of 16 here was in 2012, when Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer reached the quarterfinals.

  • With Mischa Zverev seeded No. 27 and brother Alexander seeded No. 10 here, the Zverevs are the first pair of brothers to be seeded in the men’s singles at Wimbledon since 1982, when No. 4 Sandy Mayer fell in the 3rd round and No. 6 Gene Mayer reached the quarterfinals.

  • In Grand Slam play in 2017, Zverev reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (l. today’s opponent) where he became the first German man to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Haas at 2013 Roland Garros. He was the first German to progress to the last 8 at the Australian Open since Haas in 2007. Ranked No. 50, he defeated world No. 1 Andy Murray in the round of 16 to become the lowest-ranked player to beat a top seed at a Grand Slam since No. 86 Marat Safin defeated Andy Roddick at the 2004 Australian Open. He fell in the 1st round at Roland Garros (l. Stefano Napolitano).

  • Elsewhere in 2017, Zverev reached his 2nd career Tour-level final as a qualifier at Geneva (l. Stan Wawrinka) – one of 3 occasions he has recorded 4 straight Tour-level match-wins. He also achieved the feat in finishing runner-up at 2010 Metz (l. Gilles Simon) and in reaching the quarterfinals at this year’s Australian Open.
