(July 15, 2017) Spain’s Garbine Muguruza captured her second major title in defeating five-time champion Venus Williams for her first Wimbledon title 7-6, 6-0. After a tight first set, where Williams had two set points in the tenth game, the 23-year-old Muguruza won the last nine games to close out the match.
Muguruza became the first to defeat both Williams sisters in the final of a major – 2016 French Open (Serena) and 2017 Wimbledon (Venus).
“She’s such an incredible player,” said the winner during the trophy ceremony. “I grew up watching her play.”
Muguruza lost to Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon final. “She (Serena) told me one day I was going to maybe win,” Muguruza said. “So two years after, here I am.”
At 37-years-old, Venus was the oldest Wimbledon finalist since 1994. She was trying to win her sixth Wimbledon title and eight major championship. Williams was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease in 2011.
“A lot of beautiful moments in the last couple of weeks,” Williams said after the match.
Venus asked if she had a message for her sister Serena said: “Oh, I miss you. I tried my best to do the same things you do, but I think that there’ll be other opportunities. I do.”
Venus has now reached two majors finals this year. She lost to her sister in the final of the Australian Open in January. This was her 16th major final.
“There’s always something to learn from the matches you win and the ones you don’t,” she said to media. “There’s something for me to learn from this.”
Muguruza now has four career titles, half of them major titles 2017 Wimbledon, 2016 French Open.
“I was just very composed,” Muguruza said. “Once I go to the big court, I feel good. I feel like that’s where I want to be, that’s what I practice for. That’s where I play good. “I’m happy to go to the Centre Court and to play the best player. That’s what motivates me.”
“She competed really well. So credit to her,” said Venus.
Muguruza became just the second Spanish woman to win a title at All England Club. The first, Conchita Martinez, 1994 winner was coaching Muguruza this week.
