Irina-Camelia Begu, Kiki Bertens, David Ferrer, John Isner and Andrey Rublev Take Tennis Titles
(July 23, 2017) Irina-Camelia Begu, Kiki Bertens, David Ferrer, John Isner and Andrey Rublev were this week’s winners on the tennis court this weekend.
American John Isner won his third Newport title, his eleventh career title on the ATP World Tour stopping Australian Matthew Ebden 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final. Isner became the first man in a decade and second man since records have been kept, to win a tournament without facing a break point. Tommy Haas was the last to do this in 2007 when he won the Memphis event.
“I could never imagine playing four matches and not facing a break point but I’ll certainly take it,” Isner said in an on-court interview with Tennis Channel.
“I served well all week, played extremely well all week. This is a very good tournament for my serve and I knew it was going to be hard for my opponents to break me.
“It’s been a few years since I won a tournament and it always boosts your confidence, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer.”
“It’s hard to win a tournament.,” said the 32-year-old. “It’s no small feat to come out here and be the last man standing. I’m very happy about that. It’s been two years since I won a tournament, so I had that weighing on my mind. I’m very happy with how I played all week. It was a perfect week and I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Ebden came into tournament through the qualies to make his first ATP World Tour final. “I’m not that tired to be honest,” he said. “I definitely didn’t lose because of anything physical, which is great. It’s a lot of reward for a lot of hard work, a lot of years of sacrifice. It’s disappointing, but at the same time I have to be happy with my week.”
Ebden came into the tournament ranked at No. 249, he’ll jump up in the rankings.
Isner will be in the top 20.

Irina-Camelia Begu won her home title, the BRD Bucharest Open, with 6-3, 7-5 win over Julia Goerges.
Begu was a double winner on Sunday pairing up with countrywoman Raluca Olaru to win the doubles beating Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs 6-3, 6-3.
“It is amazing. I never thought that I could win two trophies in one week, especially in Romania, in Bucharest, my hometown,” Begu said.
This is Begu’s fourth career title, first one on clay.

Veteran David Ferrer is back in the winner’s circle. The 35-year-old Spaniard won his third Bastad title besting Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine 6-4, 6-4.
Wirth Roger Federer, Feliciano Lopez and Victor Estrella Burgos also winning tournaments this year, it marked just the second time in the Open Era that at least four different players aged 35 and over have won ATP World Tour titles in a single season. This is Ferrer’s 27th career title.
“It’s been two years that I haven’t won a tournament, so I’m really happy for this win,” said Ferrer. “I was a little nervous up 5-1 and Alexandr played without pressure. I tried to be focused on every point, but when I had all those match points I was thinking too much.
“I am going week by week, match by match and I still have the motivation. I know it will very difficult to get back to the Top 10, but if I stay competitive like this week, I will play next year for sure. I still enjoy playing tennis, but it’s different as I am 35 years old.”
“I want to congratulate David, he didn’t give me many chances,” Dolgopolov said.” “Thanks to everyone here in Bastad for the warm welcome. It’s my first time here and I reached the final, so hopefully I will be back.”
