Roger Federer Withdraws From Cincinnati; Rafael Nadal Returns to World No. 1 Next Week
(August 14, 2017) Seven-time Western & Southern Open champion Roger Federer, has withdrawn from tournament due to a back injury.
“I am very sorry to pull out of the Western & Southern Open as I always enjoy playing here,” Federer said via the tournament’s website. “Cincinnati has some of the best fans in the world and I am sorry I will miss them. Unfortunately, I tweaked my back in Montreal and I need to rest this week.”
Federer’s withdrawal means that Rafael Nadal will return to No. 1 when the rankings are released next Monday and he will be the No. 1 seed at the US Open.
Nadal’s first time becoming No. 1 also came at the Western & Southern Open in 2008. He last held the No. 1 spot in July 2014. He has held the top ranking for a total of 141 weeks.
Nadal has won four tournaments this year including his tenth Roland Garros title.
