Muguruza and Pliskova Open WTA Finals in Singapore with Straight Set Wins
(October 22, 2017) No. 2 Garbine Muguruza and No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova were off to winning starts on Sunday at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Sunday as the White Group was in action.
The Spaniard Muguruza beat French Open winner and seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia 6-3, 6-4. “What I learned from the past is that every game counts, every set, because at the end only two are going to pass,” said the winner. “I take it as a final, honestly, every point, every game, every set.”
No. 3 seed Pliskova of the Czech Republic dominated No. 5 seed Venus Williams 6-2, 6-2. For American Venus Williams, this is her first trip to the WTA Finals since 2009.
“I was feeling throughout the whole year my best at all the tournaments, even though the game was not the best sometimes,” said Pliskova after the match. I have been playing for a few years so finally I feel better on the tour and better with the pressure, better with my position on the rankings.”
